Why Your AC Drain Line Keeps Clogging in Shreveport's Humidity

Air conditioners don't just cool air — they wring moisture out of it. In Shreveport's summer humidity, a typical residential system condenses 15 to 20 gallons of water per day, all of which has to exit through a three-quarter-inch PVC pipe. That constant warm, wet, dark environment is a perfect algae farm, and our long cooling season gives the slime months to build. It's why clogged condensate drains are one of the most common summer calls we run across Caddo and Bossier Parish.

How a Clogged Drain Shows Up

The first sign is often water where it shouldn't be: pooling around the indoor air handler, a drip from a ceiling register, or a brown stain blooming on the ceiling below an attic unit. Many newer systems have a float switch in the drain pan that shuts the whole system off when water backs up — so a completely dead AC on a humid August day is often just a clogged drain doing its job. Annoying, but far cheaper than a collapsed, waterlogged ceiling.

Prevention You Can Do Yourself

Flush it quarterly. Find the drain line's cleanout tee near the air handler — a vertical stub with a cap. Pour in a cup of distilled vinegar, wait 30 minutes, then flush with water. Do this in April, June, and August and you'll prevent most clogs. Skip bleach — it can corrode drain pans and kills the grass where the line terminates outside.

Know where it terminates. Follow the line outside and make sure the exit isn't buried in mulch, blocked by a shrub, or pinched where it exits the wall. The line needs to drip freely, always.

Watch the pan. If your air handler is in the attic, glance at the emergency drain pan a couple of times each summer. Standing water in the pan means the primary line is already backing up.
