How Often to Change Your AC Filter in the Ark-La-Tex
The box says 90 days. Shreveport's pine pollen, cottonwood, and red dust have other ideas. Here's the schedule that actually works here.
Every filter package prints a lifespan — usually 30, 60, or 90 days. Those numbers assume average conditions. Northwest Louisiana is not average conditions. Between April pine pollen that coats cars in yellow-green dust, May cottonwood fluff drifting like snow, oak pollen, ragweed season, and the fine dust that rural Ark-La-Tex roads generate all summer, filters here load up faster than almost anywhere in the country.
The Real Ark-La-Tex Schedule
1-inch fiberglass or basic pleated filters: every 30 days, no exceptions during cooling season. In April and May, check them at three weeks — a pollen-season filter can go from clean to carpeted that fast.
1-inch high-MERV pleated filters (MERV 11–13): every 30–45 days. The tighter media catches more, which means it loads faster, not slower. Going past 60 days on a high-MERV 1-inch filter in a Shreveport summer is asking for a frozen coil.
4-inch and 5-inch media cabinets: every 6 months normally, but check at 4 months if you have pets, live on a gravel road, or keep the windows open in spring. These are the best option for most homes — more surface area means better airflow and longer life.
Signs Yours Is Overdue Right Now
Weak airflow from the vents, dust building up on supply grilles, the system running longer cycles than usual, or a musty smell when the blower kicks on all point to a loaded filter. Pull it and hold it up to a light — if you can't see light through the media, it was due weeks ago.
Why It Matters More Here
A clogged filter is the #1 cause of frozen evaporator coils we see every summer, and frozen coils are the #1 cause of "my AC is running but blowing warm air" calls during Shreveport heat waves. A $10 filter changed on time prevents a service call, a water-stained ceiling from a melting coil, and real wear on your compressor. Set a recurring reminder on your phone for the first of every month — your system will outlast the one next door.
